ITINERARY
(Safari Package #140)
Day 1
At
approximately 10 a.m. you will be picked up from your
hotel in San Jose on a private transfer through Braulio
Carillo National Park. You will then arrive at Puerto
Viejo de Sarapiquí around 12, where lunch will be served
in a scenic, tico restaurant overlooking the Sarapiquí
River.
After
lunch, your jungle safari begins as you embark on our
modern Tico river boat, which will take you via the
Sarapiquí to the National Refuge of Barra del Colorado.
Along the way you will pass through beautiful Southern
Nicaragua,
via the San Juan River. You will need your passport
and $5 US for the visa fee (don’t worry, the border
guards here are friendly and courteous). You will then
pass back into Costa Rica on the Río Colorado, onto
your final destination on the Samay Lagoon.
Along
the trip (around 3.5 hours) you will experience the
rainforest of Costa Rica. Full of lush vegetation and
a diversity of wildlife, it is a nature lover’s dream.
Along the river’s edge you will be able to see iguanas,
monkeys, crocodiles, and a variety of birds.
Upon
your arrival at the Samay Lagoon Lodge you will be greeted
by one of our hosts who will offer you a welcome drink.
There will then be time to stroll along the Samay peninsula,
relax on the pristine Caribbean beach, or in one of
our many hammocks overlooking the sea and lagoon. At
6:30 dinner will be served in our lodge restaurant,
a place of rustic beauty whose environment will stimulate
conversation and camaraderie. All meals are served family
style, which contributes to our friendly, personal atmosphere
at the lodge, and our meals offer the finest in Tico
and international cuisine.
After
dinner you will be able to choose from a selection of
cool beverages from out bar, which offers the finest
tropical drinks such as Caipiriñas and Piña Coladas. Guests can unwind in an ideal setting to enjoy
the surrounding natural beauty. Couples may also enjoy
a beautiful moonlight stroll along the beach, with the
waves of the warm Caribbean breaking nearby.
Day 2
After a hearty
breakfast at 8, our jungle guide will lead you by canoe
across the lagoon and guide you safely on an exciting
2.5 hour jungle canoe and hiking tour, exploring the
lagoons, rivers and forests of the Barra del Colorado
Wildlife Refuge and the northern part of the Tortuguero
canals. The
tour is managed by everyone of any age (our oldest youngster
was 82 years old, a real nature enthusiast)! After the
hike, lunch will be served, followed by some time to
explore the surroundings, or just relax. Even the busiest
city-dweller will find it hard to resist an afternoon
siesta in one of our comfortable hammocks.
In the early
afternoon you are welcome to joint the boat and canoe
tour to the secluded Laguna Nueve where you can enjoy
the wilderness of the National Refuge. During the turtle
nesting season you will also have the option of a tour
to Tortuguero instead. Dinner will be served at 6:30,
and afterwards we have an optional guided, jungle night
tour. You can see caimon, birds, iguanas, fish, and
many other nocturnal animals. It is absolutely a unique
rainforest experience.
Day 3
After a leisurely breakfast, you’ll
board the river boat which will take you back to Puerto
Viejo via the Colorado, San Juan, and Sarapiquí river.
The Colorado and San Juan, like the Amazon, are divided
into many arms and channels. Often it will be hard to
recognize that you came this way to Samay. Once in Puerto
Viejo, lunch will be served, and then you’ll head back
to San José, arriving in town around 3.
What to bring:
Jeans, good shoes, rain coat, long sleeved shirts,
swim suite, camera, film, mosquito repellent.
